Immunizations, Shots, and Pain

Aug-4-2009 By Liz

I went to the Doctor’s yesterday evening to catch up on my immunizations. I received three wonderful shots. Two of which pertained to Belize. I got the Booster shot and my first Hepatitis A shot. I will need to receive the second Hepatitis A shot six months down the line from now. I’m all caught up on my Hepatitis B, which was another shot that would have pertained to Belize.

Because Courtney and I will be venturing into the jungles, it is recommended by the Centers for Disease and Protection that you take the necessary medication for Typhoid and Malaria. My doctor prescribed pills to take for these two diseases. You start to take the pills before the trip, during the trip and for four weeks after the trip. It’s not required to take this medications but it is highly advised.

I didn’t totally take the advice of Courtney’s friend Laura, which she offered fabulous advice (thanks!). I did just go to my regular doctor. I already had an appointment scheduled for a checkup on something so I just combined that with my shot session. Thanks to Health insurance the whole cost of the checkup and shots was only $25. The prescriptions will probably run $10-$15 each.

I am, however, after receiving three shots- and one being the Booster- in some serious pain this morning. Yeah, it’s not totally necessary but I think it’s worth the peace of mind to not worry about getting sick while in Belize or after returning. And I think Courtney should consider seeing a doctor in regards to his travel plans sometime as well. You do have to go 4-6 weeks before and he’s starting to run out of time. He has until August 12. I would really hate to see him get sick while in Belize (ruining both our trip) or even after Belize.
